THE BUSINESS CASE FOR POWERSKILLS

In 2021, it’s all about rapid skill building at scale.

In the fifth year of the Workplace Learning Report, we mark a pivotal moment in the industry. Gleaned from survey data, LinkedIn Learning platform insights, and industry news, one thing is crystal clear. Learning has taken center stage and is essential to help organizations develop the skills necessary to thrive and innovate in the new world of work.

 POWERSKILLS IS YOUR
FUTURE-PROOF INVESTMENT IN YOUR PEOPLE AND BUSINESS GROWTH

One of the biggest threats to achieving organizational goals is a widening gap between the skills employees have currently and the skills required to keep their companies competitive both now and in the future. As organizations evaluate the current skill sets of their employees, they are acknowledging the growing importance of PowerSkills (also referred to as “behavioral skills” or "soft(er) skills) development and articulating a need to provide focused training for employees to build these vital collaboration, communication, and problem-solving capabilities.

A recent IBM report revealed that power skills now dominate the list of core competencies that executives seek in employees, supplanting technical skills for the first time. This increased emphasis on power skills will drive the workforce development agenda in 2020. Technical skills development still remains vital as technological innovation accelerates. What endures, however, is the need for all employees to be able to collectively problem-solve, adapt to the increasing pace of change, and communicate more effectively, to name a few areas of focus.

We believe IBM is getting it right.

Referring to AceUp, the organization was quoted as "we see three major trends in employer investment in upskilling and reskilling for 2020:

  1. Power skills development will be a top priority for global enterprises to address.

  2. Enterprises will pursue upskilling and reskilling initiatives that have broad reach across their organizations.

  3. Companies will invest their training budgets in solutions that can be highly customized to the individual learner."

WHAT ARE POWERSKILLS?

PowerSkills centre around training, developing, and coaching people about how to lead self and others, work in teams, collaborate, communicate, tell stories as well as think strategically. Essential skills like empathy, forgiveness, humility, and awe, which Bersin highlights as the most powerful and sustainable skills in business are 'softer skills’ that come widely discussed after the pandemic. These are the PowerSkills that we now know are essential to success.

As the World Economic Forum (2016) has detailed, complex problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity will become the most crucial skills a worker can develop to obtain and retain a job. As new technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation replace jobs we thought were safe from automation—such as knowledge-based work in insurance, legal, and journalism professions—it will become increasingly important for workers to develop uniquely human skills.

I train leaders and teams that companies like to hire to keep.

My interest in training came from a short 30 minutes transactional selling presentation. Years that followed saw my early career interest from sales management progressed towards a Training profession that expands to a profession in Human Resources Development (HRD). At the same time, I graduated with the Master of Instructional Design and Technology.

From that point on in HRD, I gravitated to my specialisation in training, learning, performance, and development through various Human Performance Technology methods, tools and resources. Soon, I assumed a role as Instructional Technologist to embark on a journey of harmonising people with technology to achieve organisational outcomes. To that, I wrote and published my book  to capture my knowledge and experience in HRD solution and leadership under the title "Leader's Handbook- Boost- How to develop people with HRD Solutions."
